Out of Africa, a 'Black Pearl' led Portugal's way
Dubbed the 'Black Panther' or the 'Black Pearl', Eusebio, who acted as one of
Portugal's 'football ambassadors' for Euro 2004, is the most-renowned legend in
Lusitanian football. Originally from Mozambique, the great man grabbed nine
goals at the 1966 FIFA World Cup England to win the Golden Shoe and was the
first world-class striker to emerge from the African continent.

Along with Mario Coluna, who also hailed from Mozambique, he paved the way for
numerous compatriots such as Dinis, Mesias, Hilario, and later Jordao, all of
whom heralded from the remaining Portuguese colonies. This initial African
exodus would eventually spread throughout Europe, and the Eto'os, Drogbas and
Okochas currently wowing the fans of Europe's crème de la creme clubs owe a
heavy debt of gratitude to this trailblazing star.
Unseating Di Stefano with Benfica
Eusebio da Silva began playing with his local club Sporting Club Lourenco
Marques from a young age and stood out initially because of his physical
prowess (175, 73kg). He became proficient enough up front to become the subject
of a fierce bidding war between Lisbon's big two clubs, Sporting Lisbon and
Benfica.
Such was the acrimonious nature of the tug of war that he was even forced to
flee Lisbon during negotiations for a tiny Algarve village while the coaches
from the two clubs wrangled fiercely over his future. But, when the dust
settled and swords were returned to their sheaths, he had signed for Benfica at
the tender age of 18.

In his very first game for Benfica one year later, he bagged the first in a
long line of goals for the capital club. In all, the infectious talent went on
to score a phenomenal 317 goals in 301 Portuguese league matches. By way of
anecdote, that first goal - one of three he grabbed in just a matter of minutes
- came at a friendly competition in Paris against a Santos side from Brazil
featuring another youngster by the name of Pele.
A powerful striker blessed with exceptional speed, acceleration and ball-
striking abilities, Eusebio was known for his slippery 'cat-like' dribbles
perfected in the street games of his childhood. Indeed, so all-conquering was
Eusebio's influence that within two years, he became the main architect of
Benfica's European Cup triumph over Alfredo Di Stefano's imperious Real Madrid
(1962).

Portugal's brightest moments
Making his debut for the national team of his adopted country in October 1962
against Luxembourg, Eusebio played an important role in Portugal's first-ever
qualification for the FIFA World Cup held in England in 1966. And it was at
this competition, in the birthplace of the modern game, that Eusebio became a
global phenomenon like the sport had only seen few times before.
In the first round, Portugal saw off Hungary (3-1), Bulgaria (3-0) and, most
impressively, reigning world champions Brazil, who were humbled by a Eusebio
brace (3-1). In the quarter-final, the Iberian outfit and their star striker
out of Africa made a mark in the FIFA World Cup history books. Amazingly
trailing 0-3 to North Korea, Portugal staged a rousing comeback courtesy of
four goals from the shimmering 'Black Pearl', eventually triumphing 5-3. The
game earned Eusebio and Portugal a place among the legends of international
football and remains to this day one of the most astounding and entertaining
matches in the history of the competition.

The Portuguese finally went out of the tournament in the semi-final against
hosts and eventual champions England (1-2), but with his nine goals in six
matches Eusebio had almost single-handedly hauled Portugal up to a more-than-
respectable third step on the podium. "The 1966 FIFA World Cup was the high
point of my career," the iconic African recalled. "We may have lost the semi-
final, but Portuguese football was a big winner."
但可惜最後在準決賽以1-2輸給了地主國英格蘭。他回憶說："66年的世界盃是我的職業生
涯的最高峰，雖然在準決賽輸了，但是葡萄牙足球卻是最大的贏家。"
A living, smiling legend
In retrospect, perhaps the sole cause for regret is that this exceptional
player found himself isolated during his era in Portugal, never benefiting from
the emergence of a generation of high-quality Portuguese players. As a result,
the 1966 FIFA World Cup England was the only occasion on which this grand
master graced the world stage.
An enduring icon and symbol of loyalty and pride in his adopted country,
Eusebio served Benfica for just short of fourteen successful years before
taking up the offer of a golden swansong in America. He then suffered a serious
knee injury upon his return to Portugal at Beira Mar. Regarded today as the
best Portuguese footballer ever, a bronze statue of the 'Black Pearl' occupies
a proud place outside Benfica's legendary Stadio de la Luz.
Forty years on, Eusebio's exploits have lost little of their cache, and he
remains almost unchallenged as the greatest Portuguese sporting hero of all
time.

他真的是一個很值得讓人尊敬的老前輩
雖然我沒看過他踢球
但卻是看到他一直非常地關心這些新一代的葡萄牙球員們
去年歐錦賽還要頒獎給打敗自己子弟兵的希臘，真是難為他了
是說，葡萄牙球員在國家隊的生涯上都很悲情..........orz
