Sporting goalkeeper Ricardo says he is ready to test himself in The Premiership
following interest from Arsenal.
The London side have been heavily linked with a summer move for the 29-year-old
, as they look to shake up their goalkeeping options after the unconvincing
form of Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia over the past season.
The Gunners are believed to have tabled an offer for the man who dumped England
out of Euro 2004 with his penalty heroics, and Ricardo now admits that he is
ready to take his talents onto a bigger stage.
The self-confident shot-stopper admitted that he has been tracking the
situation at Highbury, and made no secret of his desire to test himself in
England.
"I am the chosen goalkeeper of Portugal and I have already shown what I can do,
" said Ricardo.
"Of course I am ready to go and play in better leagues and not just now but for
many years.
"I like challenges and to play in The Premier League is one, and more so in a
team like Arsenal who aspire to everything.
"Through the press I'm following the subject of Arsenal's goalkeepers.
"Jens Lehmann is an important goalkeeper and I don't know the reasons why he
hasn't settled there and I know less about Manuel Almunia.
"What pleases me the most about English football is the treatment they show the
players and the atmosphere in the stadiums.
"Team-mates who play in The Premiership are always encouraging me to make the
move."
If Arsenal are to snap up the star they will face competition from the likes of
Newcastle and Villarreal, with talks over Ricardo's future at Sporting set to
continue after the international break.
