Benfica name Koeman as coach

Portuguese champions Benfica have appointed Dutchman Ronald Koeman as coach,
their president Luis Filipe Vieira said on Wednesday.
Koeman, a former Netherlands international and Ajax Amsterdam manager, will be
presented to the media at Benfica's Luz stadium later on Wednesday.
He replaces Italian Giovanni Trapattoni who quit last week after steering the
Lisbon club to their first title in 11 years.

Born: Zaandam, Netherlands on March 21, 1963.
1980: Begins career as a defender, with a booming free kick, with three-year
spell at FC Groningen.
1983: Makes international debut and joins Ajax Amsterdam for three years,
winning Dutch league and Dutch Cup.
1986: Moves to PSV Eindhoven, wins another three Dutch league titles, two Dutch
Cups and the 1988 European Cup.
1988: Helps the Netherlands become European champions as they beat the Soviet
Union 2-0 in the final in Munich.
1989: Join Johan Cruyff's Barcelona and goes on to win four Spanish league
titles, one Spanish Cup and one Spanish Super Cup in six-year stay. High
point is winning the 1992 European Cup by scoring the only goal of the
final at Wembley against Sampdoria with a trademark long shot.
1990: Member of the Dutch squad which reaches the second round of the World Cup
, converting a late penalty as they lose 2-1 to West Germany in Milan.
1993: Scores for the Netherlands in 2-0 World Cup qualifying playoff win over
England in Rotterdam after controversially avoiding a red card for a
challenge on David Platt.
1994: Helps the Netherlands to the World Cup quarter-finals in the United
States, going down 3-2 to eventual champions Brazil.
1995: Returns to the Netherlands to end playing career with two-year spell at
Feyenoord. International career ends with 78 caps and 14 goals.
1997: Joins coaching set-up with Dutch national team for one season.
1998: Assistant Barcelona coach.
2000: Appointed manager of Vitesse Arnhem.
2001: Appointed manager of Ajax in December.
2002: Ajax win Dutch league and cup Double.
2004: Ajax win Dutch league title.
2005: Steps down as manager after UEFA Cup defeat by AJ Auxerre.
June 2005: Joins Portuguese champions Benfica, replacing Giovanni Trapattoni.
