Chelsea sign Maniche on loan from Dynamo Moscow
LONDON, Jan 4 (Reuters)
Chelsea signed Portugal midfielder Maniche on loan from Dynamo Moscow on
Wednesday, the English champions said.
The 28-year-old former Porto player has joined coach Jose Mourinho's Premier
League leaders until the end of the season, the English side said on their
official website.

Maniche, who won the European Cup with Porto under Mourinho in 2004, is
eligible to play for Chelsea in the Champions League because he has not played
in Europe for Dynamo.

He joined Dynamo in May 2005 for a Russian record transfer fee of 16 million

Atletico Madrid were linked last month with Maniche, who was unsettled in
Moscow.
Maniche, who also worked under Mourinho at Benfica in 2000, will increase
Chelsea's midfield options during a spell when they will be without Michael
Essien.

Maniche was a key member of the Portugal team that reached the final of Euro
2004 in their home country.

Maniche renews partnership with Mourinho

Jose Mourinho renewed his partnership with Portuguese international Maniche
when he completed the loan signing of the 28-year-old midfielder from Dynamo
Moscow.
It will be the third time that Maniche has played for Mourinho in his career
after previous spells with Benfica and Porto.
He will remain at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season, when Chelsea
will consider whether to spend up to five million pounds on his acquisition.

Maniche will provide cover while Michael Essien is injured.
"Chelsea today completed the loan signing of Portugal international midfielder
Maniche," said a statement on the club's official website.
"The 28-year-old joins until the end of the season from Dynamo Moscow. He has
not played in European competition this season so is eligible for UEFA
Champions League action."
Maniche could be called upon to replace Essien in the Champions League after
the Ghanaian was suspended for two matches.
Maniche, who started his career at Benfica, played under Mourinho during the
Chelsea manager's nine-game spell in charge at the Lisbon club in 2000.
Two years later, he followed Mourinho to Porto, where they won the UEFA Cup,
Champions League and two Portuguese league titles together.
Maniche also became a regular in the Portugal side from 2003, scoring the goal
of Euro 2004 against Holland in the semi-final and being voted into the all-
star squad tournament.

Last summer, he moved to Dynamo Moscow for a Russian record transfer fee of
about 10 million pounds along with Porto team-mate Costinha.
However, just as Jiri Jarosik joined Chelsea from CSKA Moscow in the January
transfer window 12 months ago, Maniche has now also made the switch to
Stamford Bridge.
With Mourinho having allowed Jarosik to go on loan to Birmingham - while Tiago
was sold to Lyon - the Chelsea boss needed extra midfield cover, especially
during Essien's impending absence.
Maniche recently revealed: "I have had offers from other big European teams
but obviously once Chelsea became interested, there was only one team.
"I would be crazy to turn them down, because of the manager and because I have
known some of the players there for years.
"Mourinho is the key to me signing, he has been after me for some time. He is
my maestro. He knows me from my time at Porto and Benfica.
"My greatest moments in football I owe to him and I hope to repeat this
success at Chelsea."
Mourinho last week said: "Maniche could become a historic player in my career,
the only one to play under me at three different clubs - Benfica, Porto and
Chelsea.
"He would be the final piece to give stability in a key sector."
