He played four matches at the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship, scoring two goals, and almost made the squad for UEFA Euro 2000 having made his full international debut at the age of 19. Simao Sabrosa missed the 2002 FIFA World Cup because of injury but played at UEFA Euro 2004.
