He went to both UEFA Euro 2000 and Euro 2004, but barely featured. He missed out on the 2002 FIFA World Cup due to a six-month suspension after testing positive for nandrolone. Quim was Portugal's first choice during qualification for the 2002 finals, but current number one Ricardo has since been more in favour. Quim won the Portuguese championship with Benfica in 2005 but has lost his place to Brazilian goalkeeper Marcelo Moretto, as well as facing competition from young prospect Moreira.
