Since then he has been unchallenged as Portugal's goalkeeper and played all six matches at UEFA Euro 2004, where he is best remembered for scoring the winning penalty in the quarter-final shoot-out against England. Ricardo suffered the disappointment of being the only player to lose in the final against Greece and then lose in the UEFA Cup final with Sporting Club de Portugal the next season.
