In a Ligue 1 debut to dream of, he smashed home a hat-trick in a 5-0 thrashing of FC Nantes. Pauleta went on to register a total of 65 league goals in 98 games for Bordeaux and was twice named France's Footballer of the Year. His first goals came a month later with a brace in his side's 7-0 demolition of Azerbaijan. Pauleta's two goals in the 3-0 win over Latvia took him to a total of 42, taking over from Portugal legend Eusebio as the national team's highest-ever goalscorer. It is also interesting to point out that a player who has won the hearts and minds of a nation has yet to play a single game in the Portuguese first division.
