A regular with the Portuguese squad since making his debut in November 2002,
Tiago was not a first-choice player during qualification for the 2006 FIFA
World Cup but still played in six matches. A tactically-astute midfielder with
a fierce long-range shot, he moved to Lyon from Chelsea in the summer of 2005
after winning the Premiership with the London club. Tiago was selected for
Portugal's squad for UEFA Euro 2004 but did not play in the tournament.
