Most recently, he was relegated to the Porto 'B' team which led to a move to French club Saint-Etienne. At international level, his most memorable appearance to date came against England in the UEFA Euro 2004 quarter-final, where he came on as a substitute and scored the equaliser as well as a shoot-out penalty. However, his performance did not win him a place in Portugal's semi-final or final line-up.
