Portugal and their coach Luiz Felipe Scolari set two new national team records
in Saturday's comfortable 3-0 win over minnows Luxembourg in the French city
of Metz.

The friendly success saw the Brazilian strategist move to a total of 27 wins,
ten draws and six defeats from his 43 games in charge of the Selecao das
Quinas, thus surpassing the record number of victories held by former coach
Antonio Oliveira. Under Scolari, who led Brazil to their fifth FIFA World Cup
title at Korea/Japan 2002, Portugal have scored an impressive 97 goals,
conceding just 31.

In a strange quirk of fate, the cycle began against Scolari's native Brazil
in a friendly match back in 2003. In a game played at Porto's old home, the
Estadio das Antas, Portugal beat the Auriverde 2-1 with the winning goal
coming from the Brazilian-born playmaker Deco.

The win over Luxembourg was also Portugal's 14th consecutive game without
defeat, breaking the record set by Humberto Coelho during his time as national
coach. Scolari's team have not lost since a 1-0 friendly defeat by the
Republic of Ireland in February 2005, and cruised through their Germany 2006
qualifying campaign unbeaten.

Despite his record-breaking success, Felipao (Big Phil) is not a man to rest
on his laurels and sent out a stern warning to his troops ahead of his team's
Group D opener against former colony Angola. "Angola are a much better team
than Luxembourg and will approach the game in a different way," he said.
"They are going to play out of their skin against us and we're going to need
to show much more quality if we want to win."

Simao at the double
In front of 20,000 fanatical Portuguese fans in Metz, Luxembourg put in an
excellent first-half display, and looked more likely to break the deadlock
than their more illustrious opponents. After the break, Scolari clearly felt
the need to shuffle his pack, withdrawing Costinha, Deco and Pauleta to be
replaced by Petit, Simao and Helder Postiga.

The bold triple substitution made an immediate impact, Simao scoring the
opener within a minute of entering the field, nodding home after the
Luxembourg keeper failed to hold Postiga's fierce strike. The Benfica star
scored his second goal of the night from the penalty spot on 73 minutes, and
in the closing moments Luis Figo ended a two-year international goal drought
in spectacular style.

makes it very hard to score. As soon as we got the first goal it made
everything a lot easier, especially because it forced Luxembourg out of their
defensive shell," was Scolari's typically no-nonsense assessment of his
side's performance. Portugal kick off their FIFA World Cup bid on 11 June in
Cologne.
