Former Portuguese international defender Abel Xavier has had his suspension
for a breach of anti-doping regulations reduced from 18 to 12 months by the
Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

Positive result
The decision comes seven months after UEFA's Appeals Body rejected an appeal
by the 33-year-old against a 23 November ruling by UEFA's Control and
Disciplinary Committee. It followed the positive result of a doping control
test that the then Middlesbrough FC player underwent at the UEFA Cup match
against Skoda Xanthi FC in Greece on 29 September.
'Surprised'
"We have taken note of the CAS decision. We are surprised by the verdict but
cannot make any further comments before receiving the detailed reasoning of
the decision," a UEFA spokesman said.
Free transfer
Xavier's contract with Middlesbrough was terminated in January. The
Premiership side had signed the full-back on a free transfer last August
after his release by AS Roma. He was capped 20 times by Portugal and has
played for clubs across Europe including SL Benfica, Galatasaray SK, Real
Oviedo, PSV Eindhoven, Everton FC and Liverpool FC.
