Sporting came away from their visit to the always difficult venue of the Eng.
Rui Alves stadium in Madeira with three points after Nani – on fire – made
the difference and hiked the Leoes (Lions) up to a joint first place with six
points won out of six in play.
This marked Sporting's first entirely successful outing to Madeira in five
years, Nani (12 min) spoiling the fact that the hosts looked like that this
journey would be another fruitless one for the Lisbon team. The goal picked
the visitors up and Bento's men defended their advantage with tooth and nail.
In fact the score could have been more dilated, but the Leoes have to work on
their rather blunderbuss shooting as the youngster can't be expected to save
the day every round. The second half saw things reduced to a rather rough,
destructive football.
Nevertheless, disaster for the hosts – still with no points – and a
morale-booster for Sporting before Inter Milan visit Alvalade in three days
time.
