Xavier agrees Boro deal

Abel Xavier has agreed a contract with Premiership strugglers Middlesbrough
until the end of the season following his drugs ban.

The former Portugal defender will be in his second spell with Boro, having
made two appearances for the north-east club's reserve side since his
12-month suspension for a positive drugs test expired.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate, the former England defender, said Xavier deserved
a fresh chance after seeing out his ban.
"In no way do we condone the taking of drugs but the ban was reduced by the
game's governing authorities which suggests there was a significant reason
for that," Southgate said.
