After yesterday's 3-1 win over FC Copenhagen and Manchester United's surprise
defeat to the same Celtic that the Lisbon team pumped three past last
matchday, both Benfica Coach Fernando Santos and Captain Simao were left
seeing light at the end of a tunnel that appeared blocked before.
"Nothing is impossible", stressed Simao. "After the way we went through last
season and these last two matches [the 3-0 against Celtic and the 3-1 over
Copenhagen; both matches taking place at the Da Luz stadium] I know we can
make it."
The Captain went on to underline the weekend Bwin Liga defeat to Sporting
Braga as key to unlocking the Encarnados best football. "We got the message
[Santos had given the players a collective ear-bending after losing 3-1] and
that game's now the past, but was even useful as it shocked us into raising
our game."
Fernando Santos highlighted that the Portuguese greats will be heading to
Manchester "With a difficult mission in front of us but it's all open now and
the players have shown that they can react and raise their game. I won't go
into the problems we had as it'd be like helping our rivals but the problem
has been recognised and now we're going about solving it", he explained. "Our
hope is based on the fact that we can rectify things as we showed last night",
concluded Santos.
