Couceiro sweating on injured duo
Friday 8 June 2007
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Portugal coach Jose Couceiro is facing a nervous wait on the fitness of
striker Ricardo Vaz Te and midfielder Organista who both missed training on
Thursday following injuries.
Knee concern
While Organista has been unable to train for the last few days with a muscle
problem Vaz Te limped off following a knee injury sustained during a
training session on Wednesday and remains doubtful for Sunday's opening Group
A match against Belgium after undergoing further tests. On a brighter note
for Couceiro, Nani has rejoined his team-mates after passing his medical with
new club Manchester United FC and defender Semedo has recovered from the
shoulder injury sustained at the beginning of the week.
'Big scare'
"It was a big scare," said Cagliari Calcio defender Semedo. "I am not 100 per
cent and I don't now if I am going to play. The coach has not said who will
play but I hope I can be an option. Portugal are in a very difficult group.
Anything is possible but I hope we have the best luck in the world. This year
we have less pressure compared to *last year. It was natural that there were
high expectations in last year's competition. We've made some mistakes but we
have learned from those errors. We won't repeat the same mistakes again."

Amorim eager
Portugal are in good spirits ahead of the Belgium match with influential
midfielders Manuel Fernandes and Ruben Amorim eager to get started. "We are
looking forward to playing our first match," said Amorim. "We are at the end
of the season and have had lots of training sessions so we have been thinking
about this competition for a while."
'Olympic goal'
Everton FC starlet Manuel Fernandes said that cool heads were required if
last year's tournament hosts are to make progress in the Netherlands. "I hope
the team puts in a good performance," he said. "We have our feet on the
ground and know that our goal is to reach the Olympics. After that we can
think further ahead. Who knows? Maybe we can even win the competition."
'Best-ever Belgium'
"Last year the expectations were very high," added Fernandes. "This year we
will try to lower our ambitions a little and think about one thing at a time.
We have a very good team, we are very united and we want to show our true
worth." The midfielder felt getting off to a good start against the Belgians
was essential, saying: "It is very important to start on the right foot and
we will try our best to win the match. However, we know they have a strong
squad and that they might even be Belgium's best U21 team ever."
Varela verdict
Striker Silvestre Varela also rates the Belgians highly. "Belgium play very
well on the counterattack and they have very skilful players," said the
Vitoria FC striker. "We will try to use our quality to break their
well-structured defensive line. I believe we have a strong team and we will
try to reach our main goal, the semi-finals and a place in the Olympic Games.
Then we'll see if we can go further."
