Paulo Bento: "Sporting Deserved More"
19/09/2007 23:24
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sporting Clube's straight-faced Coach Paulo Bento was understandably unhappy
in the wake of the narrow home defeat to ex-Sporting star Cristiano Ronaldo's
Manchester United at the Jose Alvalade stadium…
"I really don't consider it [the 0-1 final score] a just result; I think that
we deserved at least a draw. Manchester [United] converted the first great
chance they had on our goal. It doesn't seem a fair result, but in football
efficiency is a determining factor and more so in the Champions League",
explained the tactician.
Paulo Bento went on to argue that Sporting had "the control of the match in
the first half; the best chances were ours and we played the game the way we
had planned beforehand… but in a momentary lapse we lost the ball in
Manchester's midfield and had difficulty reorganising, letting Ronaldo come
through a gap we should have plugged."
Paulo Bento went on to explain the positive reaction of the Alvalade faithful
to the return of prodigal sons Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani as "a question of
thanks and empathy with the players concerned given their service and
dedication to Sporting in other seasons", something which was reciprocated
by Ronaldo's quasi-apologetic body language after doing his duty and scoring
against his ex-club.

Liedson: "Van der Sar Made The Difference"
19/09/2007 23:08
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to Sporting Clube's Brazilian marksman the main reason that the
debut Champions League 2007-8 match at Lisbon's Jose Alvalade stadium didn't
have a different winner was the man between the Red Devil sticks…
The Sporting number 31 was frustrated by the excellent performance by Edwin
Van der Saar who he felt avoided Manchester United walking off with a defeat.
"He [Van der Sar] made two great saves tonight that stopped us from enjoying
a completely different result", argued the Levezinho (Light One) in the
aftermath.
"We knew that it was going to be a tough match beforehand due to the high
quality of the adversary but our team fought right to the end and everybody
deserves credit for their attitude", added the player who is currently
weighing up the pros and cons of joining Deco and Pepe in choosing Portugal
over Brazil at national level.
"To lose points at home always makes things more difficult, but there are
still five more games ahead of us so we can tot it all up at the end, not
make judgements now", added the man who's averaged a goal every two games
for the Lisbon Leoes (Lions) since arriving from Corinthians in 2003.
