Portugal breathed a collective sigh of relief as the first mustn't-lose date
wasn't-lost – and there was a welcome change from the drab one-pointers
that caused Scolari so much internal anguish of late: three points in the bag.
Three new faces made the difference for Portugal with the two winning goal.
The second of them was netted by last-gasp first eleven member Hugo Almeida,
only replacing Nuno Gomes in the run-up to the match after the Benfica boy
fell injured.
The 1.91m tower scored his first ever full international goal for Portugal at
the age of 23, but it was an incredible sensation for the Werder Bremen
forward.
"I felt a certain rush of new adrenalin as that was the first goal I scored
for the seleccao nacional," he said.
"I all happened so fast but the fact of scoring for my country is very
important and, of course, I'll never forget that goal.
"I had other chances that I should have put away but the important thing is
three points and on to Kazakhstan."
