Overlooked in favour of Miguel for the right-back berth at both UEFA EURO 2004
and the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Paulo Ferreira operated on the left flank of
Portugal's defence for much of the UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying campaign. The
29-year-old has just completed a fourth season with Chelsea FC.
‧Spent first four seasons of his career in Portugal's lower leagues before
winning promotion with Vitoria FC; an ever-present with the Setubal side on
his debut top-flight campaign in 2001/02.
‧Moved to FC Porto, where he enjoyed a brilliant 2002/03 season, winning the
treble of Portuguese Liga, Portuguese Cup and UEFA Cup.
‧Topped that in second season, winning another title and the UEFA Champions
League, appearing in every minute of triumphant European campaign.
‧Became Portugal's first-choice right-back in run-up to UEFA EURO 2004 but
dropped after opening defeat v Greece; reappeared only as a substitute in
final.
‧Accompanied coach Jose Mourinho from Porto to Chelsea, adding two more
domestic titles in his first two seasons.
‧Reduced activity under Avram Grant in 2007/08; only four UEFA Champions
League starts as Chelsea took reached final in Moscow.
