A tough, resilient centre-back, Bruno Alves established himself as a first
choice for Portugal during the latter stages of the UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying
campaign and will hope to maintain that position at the finals following an
outstanding season with runaway Portuguese champions FC Porto.
‧Career got off to hesitant start with loan spells at SC Farense, Vitoria SC
and, for the whole of the 2004/05 season, at Greek club AEK Athens FC.
‧Rejoined Porto in 2005 but did not figure prominently until arrival of coach
Jesualdo Ferreira the following year.
‧Ever-present for Dragons in successive UEFA Champions League campaigns
(eight games apiece) of 2006/07 and 2007/08.
‧International at Under-21 and Olympic level, made senior debut in friendly v
Kuwait on 5 June 2007.
‧Started last six UEFA EURO 2008 qualifiers in central defence, scoring first
goal for the national team in 2-0 win v Azerbaijan in Baku.
‧Missed a penalty in Porto's 2007/08 UEFA Champions League shoot-out defeat
by FC Schalke 04.
