An experienced, authoritative central defender, Fernando Meira has spent the
past six-and-a-half years with VfB Stuttgart and captained the club to the
German championship last year. An assiduous performer for Portugal at the
2006 FIFA World Cup, UEFA EURO 2008 will be his first European Championship.
‧Early years at hometown club Vitoria SC before he headed south from
Guimaraes for Lisbon in 2000, joining SL Benfica.
‧Despite difficult 2000/01 season at Benfica (sixth place in league;
first-round elimination from UEFA Cup; three coaches, including José
Mourinho), given first caps for Portugal.
‧Joined Stuttgart in January 2002; Bundesliga runner-up in his first full
season.
‧His own-goal against Chelsea FC brought Stuttgart's elimination from 2003/04
UEFA Champions League first knockout round (0-1 on aggregate).
‧Not chosen for either 2002 World Cup or UEFA EURO 2004 but ever-present at
2006 World Cup, ending tournament on home ground, the Gottlieb-Daimler-
Stadion, in third place play-off against Germany.
‧Won Bundesliga with Stuttgart in first season as club captain.
