A newcomer to the Portugal squad since the last FIFA World Cup, Raul Meireles
has forced himself into the international reckoning with some dogged and
consistent midfield displays for FC Porto, helping the club to a hat-trick of
Portuguese championship titles.
‧Started out at CD Das Aves, finishing seventh in the second division with
the club two seasons running.
‧Joined Boavista FC in 2003 and enjoyed productive first season in top
flight, earning transfer to city rivals Porto.
‧Slow progress in first two seasons at Porto but blossomed under Jesualdo
Ferreira, becoming central cog in midfield and earning regular call-ups
during Portugal's UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying campaign.
‧Scored first UEFA Champions League goal against Chelsea FC in first knockout
round of 2006/07 edition; ever-present in Porto's 2007/08 European campaign.
．Scored winning goal at home to Sporting Clube de Portugal (1-0) in opening
home fixture of past season's league campaign.

Raul Meireles was a European champion with Portugal at Under-16 level in
