A tenacious defensive midfielder, Petit has served Portugal for the past
seven years. He suffered personal disappointment at UEFA EURO 2004 and the
2006 FIFA World Cup, but the 31-year-old SL Benfica stalwart will be eager to
re-establish himself as a key component of Luiz Felipe Scolari's side in
Austria and Switzerland.
Made league debut with Gil Vicente FC; joined Boavista FC in 2000 and helped
club to shock championship win in first season.
Capped memorable campaign with first cap in important World Cup qualifier
against Republic of Ireland in Dublin (1-1) – alongside fellow Boavista
debutants Ricardo and Nuno Frechaut.
Played all three games at 2002 World Cup in Korea Republic; joined Benfica on
return to Portugal.
Largely a bystander at UEFA EURO 2004, where lost place to Costinha and
made just a couple of substitute appearances.
Scored first two international goals within a minute – both from long range
– to conclude 7-1 win over Russia in 2006 World Cup qualifier.
Intermittent involvement at 2006 World Cup; dropped for semi-final against
France and scored own goal in third place play-off v Germany.
One Portuguese Cup (2004) and one national title (2005) in six seasons at
Benfica.
Did you know?
The nickname 'Petit' stems from the fact that he was born in the French city
of Strasbourg.
