A powerful left-footed striker, Hugo Almeida is seen by many as the heir
apparent to Pauleta, Portugal's record goalscorer, who retired from
international football after the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He has yet to live up
to that billing at the highest level, but an impressive season with Werder
Bremen should stand him in good stead for UEFA EURO 2008.
Started out with FC Porto but struggled to make grade at first and had loan
spells at UD Leiria and Boavista FC.
A star striker, meanwhile, at youth level for Portugal, he played in three
UEFA European Under-21 Championships (2004, 2006, 2007) as well as the 2004
Olympics in Athens.
A 'supersub' for Porto in 2005/06 title win; scored stunning long-range goal
against FC Internazionale Milano at San Siro in UEFA Champions League – his
first in that competition.
Joined Bremen on loan in 2006; move made permanent at cost of €4m the
following year.
Scored eleven Bundesliga goals in 2007/08 plus four in Europe, including UEFA
Champions League strikes against Olympiacos CFP and S.S. Lazio.
Did you know?
Hugo Almeida made two UEFA Champions League appearances at the end of 2003 en
route to Porto's triumph in the competition that season.
