Overlooked for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, 21-year-old Joao Moutinho goes into
UEFA EURO 2008 as one of the potential young stars of the tournament. The
diminutive Sporting Clube de Portugal captain is a midfield organiser of
considerable pedigree – despite his tender years.
Made his first-team debut for Sporting in January 2005 and did enough in
first few months to be voted Newcomer of the Season.
On the field for every minute of following league campaign, scoring four
goals in his 34 appearances.
Made two substitute appearances in 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign but not
chosen for finals; played instead at 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship,
where scored winning goal v Germany.
Also on duty at the 2007 edition of the U21 tournament and six times in UEFA
EURO 2008 qualification (five as a replacement).
Marathon 2007/08 campaign on four fronts ended with his lifting Portuguese
Cup for second successive year after extra-time win over champions FC Porto
in final (2-0).
