A Portuguese international for almost a decade, Simao is a gifted
right-winger. His impact at previous tournaments has been relatively modest
but at 28, he is still in the prime of his career and should provide his
country with valuable experience and leadership this summer.
Early promise at Sporting Clube de Portugal earned first senior cap just
after turning 19; celebrated with goal on debut against Israel.
Left Sporting for FC Barcelona while still in teens but came home two years
later, joining SL Benfica, where he would become captain and talismanic
figure over six-year period.
Gradual progress at international level – injured for 2002 FIFA World Cup,
just five starts in total at both UEFA EURO 2004 and 2006 World Cup –
though scored important penalties against England in both tournaments and
won 50th cap in World Cup third place play-off against Germany.
Scored extra-time winner in 2004 Portuguese Cup final against FC Porto and
skippered Benfica to 2004/05 Liga title, top-scoring with 15 goals.
Voted 2007 Portuguese Footballer of the Year after leaving Benfica for Club
Atletico de Madrid.
Did you know?
Simao's only two UEFA Champions League goals, both scored in the 2005/06
season, were against English giants Manchester FC at Old Trafford and
Liverpool FC at Anfield.
