A Portuguese international since 1999, Quim has long been his country's
second-choice goalkeeper, acting as deputy to Vitor Baia first then Ricardo.
The 32-year-old is renowned for his excellent shot-stopping and has served
two clubs, SC Braga and SL Benfica, with great distinction.
Won the UEFA European Under-18 Championship with Portugal in 1994.
Took over from Rui Correia at Braga in the late 1990s; remained at club until
2004, appearing in just one European match – a 1998/99 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup
tie against FC Lokomotiv Moskva.
Major tournament debut at UEFA EURO 2000; became No1 briefly in 2002 FIFA
World Cup qualifiers before Vitor Baia reclaimed position; did not travel
to Far East for finals.
Unused squad member at UEFA EURO 2004 and 2006 World Cup.
Won Portuguese title in first season at Benfica (under Italian coach Giovanni
Trapattoni); has since made 15 UEFA Champions League appearances for club.
His full name is Joaquim Manuel Sampaio da Silva.
Did you know?
Quim's has played a mere two minutes of UEFA European Championship football
– as a late substitute in the final group game of the 2000 finals against
Germany.
