Since his emergence at UEFA EURO 2004, Ricardo Carvalho has grown into one
of the world's outstanding central defenders. His abrasive,
thou-shalt-not-pass qualities have been a major asset for both Portugal and
his club Chelsea FC over the past four years.
Thrown into the deep end as Fernando Couto's replacement for Portugal's
second game at UEFA EURO 2004, against Russia. Started every game thereafter,
winning place in UEFA All-Star Team.
Equally effective at 2006 FIFA World Cup – despite playing with different
central defensive partner (Fernando Meira instead of injured Jorge Andrade) –
though conceded penalty in semi-final defeat by France.
Broke into FC Porto side midway through 2002/03 season that ended with treble
success of Portuguese Liga, Portuguese Cup and UEFA Cup.
On field for every minute of Porto's 2003/04 UEFA Champions League triumph.
Subsequently voted UEFA Defender of Year.
Followed coach Jose Mourinho to Chelsea, winning two further league titles,
two League Cups and one FA Cup (though injured for Wembley final) under
mentor.
Runner-up to Manchester United FC in both UEFA Champions League and Premier
League in 2007/08.
Did you know?
Prior to starring at UEFA EURO 2004, Carvalho had earned only five
international caps – all in friendlies, all as a substitute.
