A speedy right-back who served his country well at UEFA EURO 2004 and the
2006 FIFA World Cup, Luis Miguel will be eager to rise to the challenge of
international tournament football again after his club – Valencia CF –
suffered a troubled domestic season in Spain.
Began with CF Estrela Amadora as a right-winger before crossing town to
Lisbon giants SL Benfica in 2000.
Never appeared in UEFA Champions League in five seasons at Benfica but won
Portuguese Cup in 2004 (2-1 after extra time in the final against FC Porto)
and Liga title (under Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni) 12 months later.
Left for Valencia in 2005; two UEFA Champions League campaigns (15
appearances) and victory in 2008 Copa del Rey.
First Portugal cap in February 2003; replaced Paulo Ferreira at UEFA EURO 2004
after opening loss to Greece, starting all subsequent matches.
Started every game bar third place play-off at 2006 World Cup.
Ten appearances in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying.
