While his older brother Maniche has surprisingly been left at home, Jorge
Ribeiro goes into his first major tournament buoyed by an impressive season
in the Portuguese Liga with Boavista FC and a transfer back to his first
club, SL Benfica. A versatile defender, he can also fill in further forward
in midfield.
Patchwork start to career with Benfica, who farmed him off to a succession of
clubs, including Varzim SC and Gil Vicente FC.
Moved to Russia in 2005, joining FC Dinamo Moskva, where he played alongside
brother Maniche.
Further loan spells at Malaga CF and CD Das Aves (both of whom were
relegated from their respective divisions) before breakthrough season at
Boavista in 2007/08.
Won first cap in November 2002 against Scotland but had to wait two years for
second; inconsistent selection until 2008 when he played as a substitute in
successive friendlies v Italy and Greece.
Boavista's top league scorer with eight goals; club forcibly demoted due to
fraud but left to rejoin Benfica.
