Born in Brazil, Pepe was granted Portuguese citizenship in August 2007. The
promising centre-back made his international debut in Portugal's final UEFA
EURO 2008 qualifier at home to Finland. His stock has risen after helping
Real Madrid CF win the Primera Division title in his first season at
Santiago Bernabéu.
Left Brazil for the island of Madeira as an 18-year-old, joining Portuguese
top-flight club CS Maritimo.
A popular figure with the Maritimo fans, but left for FC Porto in 2004 –
a year after a move to Sporting Clube de Portugal fell through.
Difficult first season with Dragons followed by two title-winning campaigns
in which he became team's defensive linchpin.
Scored twice in UEFA Champions League for Porto against Rangers FC at Ibrox
but hosts won 3-2.
Signed by Real Madrid for €30m in July 2007; injury-blighted start but
returned to help side to a crucial 1-0 win at FC Barcelona and feature
prominently in closing weeks of title-winning campaign.
