Miguel Veloso is the son of Antonio Veloso, who played for Portugal at the
1984 UEFA European Championship. Whereas his father captained SL Benfica,
Veloso junior has come through the ranks at city rivals Sporting Clube de
Portugal. The youngster attracted much attention with his mature midfield
displays for club and country in 2007/08.
Joined Sporting at 14; made his mark while on loan to third-tier club CD
Olivais e Moscavide in 2005/06, helping club to win promotion.
Equally impressive debut season in Portuguese top flight with Sporting;
played in 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Netherlands, top
scoring with two goals in three games.
Called up to senior national side in August 2007; made debut two months later
in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier v Azerbaijan and kept place in final three
qualifiers against Kazakhstan, Armenia and Finland.
Key man for Sporting in 2007/08 as club played in UEFA Champions League,
reached UEFA Cup quarter-finals, finished second in league and won Portuguese
Cup for second year in a row.
