Born in the Cape Verde Islands, Nani followed in the footsteps of another
offshore native (Madeiran Cristiano Ronaldo) when he left Sporting Clube de
Portugal for Manchester United FC last year. One of several gifted wingers
available to Portugal, the 21-year-old will hope to leave a big impression at
his first major tournament.
Emigrated to Portuguese mainland at an early age and raised in Lisbon.
Graduate of Sporting academy, twice Portuguese Liga runner-up and domestic
cup winner in 2007 final against CF Os Belenenses (1-0) – his last game
before move to England.
Played for Portugal at back-to-back UEFA European Under-21 Championships in
2006 and 2007.
Credited with goal against Denmark on international debut after initial
reports recorded it as a Thomas Sorensen own-goal; scored second for
Portugal in UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier against Belgium (2-1 win in Brussels);
mainly a substitute during qualifying campaign.
Debut season at Manchester United included a long-range goal against
Tottenham Hotspur FC that gave club first Premier League win of season.
