Brazilian-born but central to Portugal's progress under compatriot coach Luiz
Felipe Scolari, Deco has missed much of FC Barcelona's 2007/08 season with
injury. However, the lay-off may prove beneficial as the skilful schemer
travels to UEFA EURO 2008 fit, fresh and with batteries fully recharged.
Crossed the Atlantic at 19, joining SL Benfica, but farmed out by coach
Graeme Souness to nursery club FC Alverca and eventually settled at rivals FC
Porto.
Made sensational international debut, scoring late free-kick winner in Porto
against native Brazil (2-1).
Stand-out performer in Porto's 2003 UEFA Cup final victory over Celtic FC;
UEFA Champions League winner 12 months later, scoring second goal in final
against AS Monaco FC (3-0) – last game before transfer to Barcelona.
Key figure at UEFA EURO 2004, where replaced Rui Costa as central
playmaker; Portuguese Footballer of Year for 2004.
Two Primera División titles in first two seasons at Camp Nou and another
UEFA Champions League win in 2006.
Eventful 2006 FIFA World Cup – injured for first game; scored in second;
rested for third; sent off in fourth; suspended for fifth; defeated in sixth.
