A veteran of two UEFA European Championships, Nuno Gomes has re-emerged as
the main candidate to spearhead Portugal's attack following the retirement of
record goalscorer Pauleta. A consistent international marksman himself, the
31-year-old SL Benfica striker is unlikely to be fazed by the challenge.
Has represented Portugal at every age group from Under-15 upwards; first
capped at senior level aged 19.
Revelation at UEFA EURO 2000, where he scored four goals (the winner v
England; two in quarter-final v Turkey; one in semi-final v France). However,
banned by UEFA for seven months for pushing referee after semi-final defeat.
Seven goals in last three 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers but no starts at
finals.
Deputy to Pauleta at UEFA EURO 2004 and 2006 World Cup (where he scored
consolation goal in play-off v Germany).
Joined Benfica from Boavista FC in 1997. Long spell at club broken by
two-year stint at ACF Fiorentina (2000-02), where he was signed for
club-record fee. Won Coppa Italia in first season; relegated in second.
Devotion to Benfica rewarded with captaincy for 2007/08 season. Portuguese
Cup winner in 1997 and 2004; Liga champion in 2005.
