Although short of goals at club level in 2007/08, Hélder Postiga's
reputation for finding the net at vital times for his country has earned him
a place in Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad this summer. UEFA EURO 2008 is the
25-year-old striker's third major tournament.
Quick out of the blocks in his first season at FC Porto (2001/02), scoring
nine league goals.
Raised that tally to 13 in 2002/03 while also scoring six times in Porto's
UEFA Cup triumph but missing final v Celtic FC through suspension.
Two goals on first international start – v Bolivia – helped persuade
Tottenham Hotspur FC to sign him; however, scored just one English Premier
League goal.
Sold back to Porto in 2004 – despite coming on as a substitute to score late
equaliser (and penalty in subsequent shoot-out) for Portugal v England at
UEFA EURO 2004 (on his only appearance at finals).
Unable to recapture club form of old but chosen again for 2006 FIFA World Cup
squad – scored another penalty against England.
Spent second half of 2007/08 campaign on loan at Panathinaikos FC.
Did you know?
Helder Postiga played in only two UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying matches but
scored a winning goal in one of them – the 2-1 away victory over Belgium.
