Gael Monfils from France and Shahar Peer from Israel are the new Australian
Open Junior Champions, after both achieved convincing straight set victories
from their singles matches today.
Monfils, the No. 8 seed, today defeated his friend and room-mate, Josselyn
Ouanna, 6-0 6-3. This is a breakthrough win for Monfils who has been runner
up in the past three tournaments he has played in.
Israel's Shahar Peer, seeded No. 13, has stormed through the girls' singles,
today defeating No. 3 seed Nicole Vaidisova from the Czech Republic 6-1 6-4.
In boys' doubles the all-American pair of Brendan Evans and Scott Oudsema
totally outclassed local boys David Galic (Frankston, VIC) and David Jeflea
(Green Valley, NSW), winning 6-1 6-1.
In girls' doubles the No. 2 seeds, Sheng-Nan Sun (China) and Yung Jan Chan
(Taipei) were too strong for top seeded Czech Republic pair, Nicole Vaidisova
and Veronika Chvojkova.
