Dupuis Needs 10 Match Points to Claim First ATP Title
Thirty-year-old Frenchman Antony Dupuis enjoyed the best tennis week in
his career, taking his first ATP title with a 6-4, 6-7(12), 7-6(5) win
over 19-year-old Croat Mario Ancic in the INDESIT ATP Milano Indoor 2004
final. The match took 2 hours and 42 minutes.
Dupuis earned 51,400 euros and 35 INDESIT ATP 2004 Race points.
Dupuis needed 10 match points to win his first ATP title. He failed to
convert seven in the second set tie-break, including four in a row at 6-2.
Dupuis is the second Frenchman to win in Milan after Yannick Noah in 1988
and is the second French winner on the 2004 ATP circuit (Nicolas Escude,
Doha)
Dupuis was playing in his second career ATP final (lost to Jiri Novak in
the 2001 Munich final).
Ancic had never advanced past the quarterfinal round on the ATP circuit
before Milan and was looking to become the second Croatian winner in Milan
after Goran Ivanisevic (1996-97).
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Dupuis: “I cannot describe in words how happy I feel. To win an ATP title
is such a big achievement for a tennis player. I am 30 years old and fitter
than ever. This gives me the motivation to work even harder in the future.
“I had lost after having match points at the Australian Open and the
challenger in Wroclaw, so obviously it was in the back of mind after I
wasted the seven match points in the second set."
Ancic: “I have to give him credit. He played well and fully deserved to
win. I played well too, had a few chances but he was lucky with a couple
of net cords on important points like the final set tie-break.
“I am pretty happy with my five matches this week. It was a good tournament
for me, my first ATP final.”
