Dechy reaches quarter-finals at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, United States (AFP) - France's Nathalie Dechy registered her 300th career singles match win, upsetting sixth seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the ATP/WTA Indian Wells Masters Series event.
"Wow, 300 wins," said Dechy. "My next stop is 400 wins.
"That must mean I have been on the tour a long time. When I see the 14-year-old girls around the locker room it makes me feel old."
Dechy, who is ranked 28th, continued her success here, advancing to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells for the first time.
She reached the round of 16 three other times in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
Dechy attributes her success at Indian Wells to a solid routine.
"I love this tournament. It is the perfect place to play. It is sunny all the time and there is no wind," she said. "I can just concentrate on tennis."
Dechy got off to a strong start in 2003 with her first career title in Gold Coast, Australia but then was sidelined for much of the season with wrist tendonitis.
"I had three months off so there was lots of time to recover," said Dechy, who is in her 11th season on the WTA Tour.
Dechy has a career win-loss record of 299-209. She started this year defending her Gold Coast title and now has 11 match wins and four losses in 2004.
"I am feeling much stronger. I have had some good results which have given me confidence," she said.
