Clement, Grosjean Claim Doubles Title
French duo Arnaud Clement and Sebastien Grosjean captured their first ATP
Masters Series shield together with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Zimbabw's
Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett in the final of the Pacific Life Open in Indian
Wells.
Clement and Grosjean, who stunned top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan in the second
round as well as two-time champions Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor in the
semifinals, were playing in their first tournament together since Lyon in
2003.
It was Clement and Grosjean's second doubles title as a team, having won in
Casablanca in 2000. Clement now has won three career doubles titles, while
Grosjean has won four.
“We've really enjoyed playing together this week,” said Grosjean. “It was
the first time we've played together this year. We've beaten the No. 1 team
so we didn't have any pressure coming into the final. We had our chances in
the second set, but fought back in the third to win the match.”
Black and Ullyett were attempting to win their first ATP Masters Series
shield together, having previously lost in finals in Madrid (2003) and Rome
(2002). The former US Open champions last picked up a trophy in Munich on
clay last year. Black was attempting to win his second title in Indian Wells,
having teamed with Sandon Stolle to defeat Ellis Ferreira and Rick Leach in
1999.
In the women's doubles final, top seeds Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola
Suarez captured their second WTA Tour title of the year with a 6-1, 6-2
victory over second seeded Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena
Likhovtseva.
Ruano Pascual and Suarez, who defeated the Russian dup to win the Australian
Open doubles title earlier this year and reached the final in Auckland in
their only two tournaments together in 2004, were making their second
appearance in an Indian Wells final after losing in 2001 to Arendt-Sugiyama.
Ruano Pascual and Suarez now hold 22 doubles titles together, with Ruano
Pascual holding 25 career doubles titles and Suarez holding 32 overall.
“I think we know each other really very well on the court, said Suarez.
“We've played for eight years, and that's so important. We are always
laughing. We enjoy to play together and we have fun.”
Kuznetsova and Likhovtseva were appearing in their fifth consecutive doubles
final, holding a perfect record up to the finals for the 2004 season. They
won Gold Coast and Doha and have lost in the finals of Australian Open (to
Ruano Pascual/Suarez), Dubai and now Indian Wells.
