Loit Wins First WTA Tour Singles Title
CASABLANCA, Morocco - Emilie Loit of France won her first career WTA Tour
title on Sunday at the Grand Prix SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in
Casablanca. The tournament's top seed captured the title in her first
appearance in a singles final, defeating No.4 seed Ludmila Cervanova, 62 62.
Loit, playing in Casablanca for the first time, had reached the semifinals
six times in WTA Tour events but had never reached a final until this week.
The 24-year-old, who made her debut on the WTA Tour in 1998, overcame a
couple of tough matches in the first and second rounds and seemed to get
better as the week progressed.
She dropped the first set in her first round match with Indian wildcard
Sania Mirza before recovering for a 57 64 62. In the second set, the
Frenchwoman was again pushed to three sets, this time surviving the
challenge from Silvija Talaja.
From there, Loit defeated Marta Marrero in the quarters and then defending
Casablanca champion Rita Grande to reach her first final. Loit played her
best match of the week in the championship, only surrendering four games
to Cervanova.
Cervanova was also playing in her first career WTA Tour singles final.
Despite falling short of her first career title, Cervanova had a good week
in Casablanca, not dropping a set in wins against Els Callens, Eva Birnerova,
Marta Domachowska and Klara Koukalova to reach the final.
Loit will take home $16,000 USD as the winner of the Tier V event, and
Cervanova walks away with $9,000 as the runner-up.
