Loit Wins Second Title in Two Weeks
ESTORIL, Portugal - After waiting years to capture her first WTA Tour title,
Emilie Loit only had to wait a matter of days before winning her second title
at the Estoril Open.
The No.3 seeded Frenchwoman, who had played in the main draw or qualifying
of 134 WTA Tour events before winning her first career title last week in
Casablanca, won her second singles title in as many weeks on Sunday with a
75 76(1) victory against No.6 seed Iveta Benesova in 1 hour, 51 minutes.
"It has been two spectacular weeks," said Loit. "It's been my Grand Slam. I
didn't think I could win, but I really tried to. I'm very happy with what I
have achieved, it's the result of all the work I've been doing the past few
weeks."
Loit, who now owns a 10-match winning streak, got off to a great start in
the championship match for the second straight week - taking a 4-1 lead in
the first set before Benesova stormed back to win the next four games. The
Czech player served for the first set at 5-4 before losing her service game
and had the opportunity to force a tiebreak, but Loit away again able to get
the break back and win the first set.
Loit produced an identical 4-1 lead at the start of the second set as
Benesova again roared back to even things up and had the opportunity to
serve for the set at 5-4 and 6-5, but Loit held her ground to force a
tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Loit jumped out to a 6-0 lead and won the
match two points later when Benesova's forehand sailed wide.
"Technically, today I wasn't so good," said Loit. "Yesterday was a lot
better. I didn't play my best tennis but I was so confident that I felt
that I can win the title. Normally it would have been easier to win after
the first one, but today's final was very tough. I had a lot of stress at
4-1, felt the pressure, but then it turned out to be that I was very tired.
After a 5-0 start to the clay court season in Casablanca, the 24-year-old
Loit brought the same form with her to Estoril. She started with an easy
62 62 victory against Els Callens in the first round, before a rematch of
the Casablanca final with Ludmila Cervanova awaited her in the second round.
Loit triumphed again in their second match in four days, this time only
giving up two games in a 62 60 win.
She dropped her only set of the tournament in the quarterfinals, but still
managed to defeat Klara Koukalova, 63 26 64 and followed by defeating Marta
Marrero for the second straight week in the semifinals, 64 64.
Benesova had defeated Loit in their last outing, a 76(4) 61 decision earlier
this year in Acapulco, en route to the Czech player's first career title.
"It was a tough match today," Benesova said. "I was down 4-1 in both sets
and came back to serve for both sets but I couldn't hold. I wasn't aggressive
enough. But I have to give credit to Emilie, she played really well on the
big points.
"It's a bit disappointing to lose such a close match, but I've played good
tennis and improved the whole week, so it's been a great tournament for me."
