Santoro celebrates Monte Carlo record

MONACO, April 21 (Reuters) - Fabrice Santoro celebrated a record 14th year at the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday, beating Taylor Dent 6-3 6-2 to reach the third round.
The 31-year-old Frenchman is not the oldest player in the draw but no other player has visited the principality's clay courts more often.
Having made his debut aged 16 in 1989, Santoro has missed the tournament just twice -- in 1994 and 1999.
If the last three years have been disappointing, featuring three first round losses, Santoro has fond memories of Monte Carlo.
"I have two great memories here," said the Frenchman, now ranked 76th in the world.
"In 1997 I reached the semi-finals beating great players like Thomas Muster, Sergi Bruguera or Carlos Costa along the way.
"The year after I beat Pete Sampras 6-1 6-1 which not many players have done."
