Day 7 - Amelie Mauresmo interview
Sunday, May 30, 2004
Q. Was it an easy match? It went so fast for you.
AMELIE MAURESMO: No. I think, yeah, the score looks easy, but I think these
kind of matches are never easy to handle when you get on the court.
I just played a great tennis. You know, I felt that my game again is getting
better and better as the matches are going. Yeah, I made it probably look
easy.
Q. Obviously, Yannick Noah is one of your big heroes. What about Gabriela
Sabatini? Did you ever see her play?
AMELIE MAURESMO: The backhand (smiling)? Actually, I don't think I ever see
her play. But, yeah, I liked her game. I liked the way she was playing. But
I was more inspired by Yannick than her.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in French, please.
Q. Roger Federer talked about the effect of playing on central court and the
difficulty with such a big court. You know it quite well. You've been on it
for three matches. Do you feel you're at ease with central court?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, yes, I'm feeling better and better on central court.
It's true that the conditions are a little bit different in terms of the
surface, which is perhaps slightly different from the other courts, but
also in terms of the wind.
But each match is a different match, so it's very difficult to say, "I'm in
control." We'll have to see. But I do get the feeling that I feel more at
ease on that court now.
Q. This sort of match against a well-known player that you must have seen
play a number of times, after three matches, isn't it easier, in fact, than
the very first rounds?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, when I feel that my tennis is sort of fitting in as
the matches go along, you feel more and more at ease as the tournament moves
forward. I felt well today. It's true that maybe I'm a bit of a
perfectionist. I can see there's still a few things I need to work on.
But I do get the feeling that I'm playing better and better. But let's not
get excited.
Q. We want to know about those little details you need to work on.
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, it's really details in terms of the service, in terms
of making decisions a little bit quicker - perhaps to attack, for instance.
But there's nothing really major that I need to change or work on in my game.
It's just a few details.
Q. You played much easier tennis than in the previous rounds, it seemed.
AMELIE MAURESMO: Yes, I think the second set of my previous round, I'd been
playing quite well. But, as I said, I'm not going to analyze every match,
"How do you manage this? How do you feel?" I just try to get through the
matches. In every tournament, you sort of build power as you go along.
Q. Among the different parameters that allow you to play beginning to end,
which are the most important?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Attacking, moving forward, probably trying to impose power
in my attack.
Q. At the end, when you left the court, you looked really absolutely
delighted. You looked really happy. What was that about? Did it have anything
to do with the crowd, as well?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, I think it's everything. It's my relationship with the
crowd, it's the way I played. It's a whole lot of things. There's nothing else
I need to say. I'm going forward, so that's nice.
Q. Your next opponent is Dementieva, who beat Davenport. You knew this before
going on court?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Yes.
Q. How do you feel about that next match?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Well, I was a little bit surprised about the score. I didn't
watch the match. I haven't seen her play over the past week. But this is a
player I know quite well. In fact, we've played each other a number of times
before, particularly last year. I think it's up to me to impose my strong
points, my game, and not let her take the initiative.
Q. Do the weather conditions have any sort of influence on your game?
AMELIE MAURESMO: Maybe. In fact, the court was perhaps a bit slower today.
But I usually function quite well. I don't think it makes much of a
difference.
