Amelie Mauresmo's dream of capturing a Grand Slam title suffered another
severe blow on Tuesday after the Frenchwoman was sent crashing by Russian
Elena Dementieva.
The 22-year-old Russian, seeded ninth, posted a solid performance and
overcame late-match jitters to dismiss the third seeded Mauresmo 6-4 6-3
in a match interrupted twice by rain.
“It’s more than disappointment. It’s frustration. I still have work to
do here to play my game and be at 100 per cent,” Mauresmo said.
“It’s difficult for me to play here. I’m French and I’m playing in
France. This morning I was feeling more pressure than in my other matches.
In the following weeks, we’ll make a cooler assessment on what happened.
The other Grand slams are easier to manage. Maybe if I do well there, I
could find a solution to play better here and progress. I’m not there
yet,” she added.
Dementieva is now set for a confrontation with Argentine's Paola Suarez who
continued her surprising run here. The fourteenth-seeded Argentine moved
into her first Grand Slam singles semi final after her easy 6-1 6-3 triumph
over Russian Maria Sharapova earlier on Tuesday.
Mauresmo once again suffered jitters and was unable to find the right aim
and take advantage of her opponent's marshmallow second serves.
Clearly the more aggressive of the two, Dementieva kept pounding blistering
winners (27) past her opponent, who littered the court with 33 unforced
errors.
The 10-ranked Russian started the match with authority and wasted no time
in breaking the Frenchwoman, before the match was interrupted for the first
time in the early stages of the contest.
Down 3-1, the French No1 progressively found herself and evened the scores
at 3-3 only to concede her delivery in the following game. Dementieva
returned the favor as the two rivals went back into the locker room when
rain stopped play at 4-4.
Upon their return, Dementieva continued her victorious march, breaking
Mauresmo again to close out the set on her second set point.
Up 4-2 in the second set, Dementieva, a US Open semi-finalist in 2000, took
command of the match despite suffering jitters of her own while serving for
the match at 5-2. But the Russian recouped and screamed in relief when she
finished the job on her fourth match point.
