PARIS, June 1 (Reuters) - Nerves once again let Amelie Mauresmo down in front o
f her home crowd as she lost 6-4 6-3 to Elena Dementieva in the quarter-finals
of the French Open on Tuesday.
The third seed has never made it past the quarter-finals in 10 appearances at R
oland Garros, going out in the opening two rounds on six occasions.
"I still have a lot of work to do to handle my emotions. It's getting repetitiv
e at Roland Garros," she said.
"It's not a nightmare, there are worse things in life but it's an immense frust
ration not to be able to give it my best," she added.
Mauresmo, who usually imposes her pace and power on opponents, looked tense and
sluggish throughout the 93-minute quarter-final. Dementieva boldly took advant
age.
"You're more tense, the shots are not so good, the legs not so mobile. As a res
ult, the balls go out by inches and it all goes from bad to worse," Mauresmo sa
id.
Things had looked promising for the Frenchwoman after convincing victories in t
he Italian and German Opens.
Mauresmo had the experience of playing a quarter-final on centre court last yea
r and had been offered an ideal preparation by organisers with four of her five
matches staged on centre court.
In Dementieva she had an opponent she had beaten six times in eight previous en
counters.
She was fit, better prepared than ever, playing her best tennis.
Mauresmo had cut herself off from media pressure by refusing interviews, not re
ading newspapers or watching television.
And she had asked 1983 winner Yannick Noah to give her advice on how to win at
home.
The odds appeared to be stacked in her favour but she failed once again.
Asked why she struggled so much at home, Mauresmo replied: "Because this is the
tournament which gave me the urge to play tennis. Because it's at home and bec
ause I want so badly to do well here.
"Maybe the solution lies abroad. Maybe I just have to try and win a grand slam
elsewhere to ever have a chance of one day winning here," she said.
