Saturday's men's doubles final which pits French duo Fabrice Santoro/Michael
Llodra (No6) against Belgian pairing Xavier Malisse/Olivier Rochus will make
history regardless of who takes the spoils. No doubles team has ever won the
first two legs of the Grand Slam since the advent of the Open era in 1968; a
feat which local boys 'Fab and Mika' will be attempting to pull off after
their impressive win over defending champions and number one seeds Bob and
Mike Bryan in the semi final. It has been twenty years since a French pairing,
Yannick Noah and Henri Leconte, wrote their name on the Jacques-Brungnon Cup
in Paris.
The Belgian tandem, in what will be their first Slam final, will be looking
to bring the laurels back to the flatlands just 12 months after compatriot
Justine Henin-Hardenne triumphed here in the women's singles. For a duo that
have only teamed up twice before, they hit the ground running in Paris,
eliminating Todd Martin and Mikhail Youzhny in the first round and then
picking off a veritable who's who of men's doubles on the way to the final;
brushing aside the No13, No2, No9 and No3 seeds, conceding just one set along
the way.
Malisse took on Santoro/Llodra last year in the US Open second round when he
paired with another Belgian Tom Vanhoudt. The Frenchmen won easily 6-2 6-4 on
that occasion but would be well advised to expect a sterner test on Saturday
against two men who have sparkled this week.
