Top-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils and Bulgarian Sesil Karatancheva showed
no mercy on Sunday to capture their first Roland Garros junior titles.
The 18-year-old Monfils played an outstanding game on Court No1 to dispatch
17-year-old American rival Alex Kuznetsov 6-2 6-2 while 14-year-old
Karatancheva, also the No1 seed, gave Romanian Madalina Gojnea a 6-4 6-0
beating.
The athletic Frenchman, who lost just one set during the tournament, played
a dominating contest and demolished his opponent with his whopping forehand
and blistering serve.
Monfils, whose game resembles that of US star Andy Roddick, and whose
favorite player is Arthur Ashe, suffered from early jitters and staved
off two break points in the second game to hold serve.
It was all Monfils after that, as the reigning Australian Open junior
champion broke in the third and seventh game to take the first set. The
Parisian, ranked No1 in the world, continued his pounding, breaking the
American in the first and third game to go up 4-0.
Monfils suffered a late scare when he lost his serve in the seventh game but
recovered just in time to wrap up the victory a few games later. He cranked
20 winners, including five winners, to Kuznetsov’s 13.
The last Frenchman to win the junior boys singles crown was Richard Gasquet
in 2002.
Karatancheva had an easy day at the office, despite falling behind 1-3 in
the fist set. But the aggressive Bulgarian, managed by famed coach Nick
Bolletieri, regrouped and nailed eleven of the last twelve games to finish
off her hapless opponent in 66 minutes on Court Two.
The Bulgarian blasted 22 winners to her opponent’s six, but made 40 unforced
errors.
