Open-France's Monfils wins French Open junior title

PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - France's Gael Monfils won his second successive junio
r grand slam title on Sunday with a 6-2 6-2 victory over American Alex Kusnetso
v at the French Open.
Having also captured the Australian Open earlier this year, the 17-year-old is
hoping to follow in the footsteps of Stefan Edberg, who won all four major juni
or titles in 1983.
"I'm not too interested in tennis history but it would be a great challenge to
emulate Edberg," said Monfils, who is of West Indian origin.
However, Monfils admitted his chances of succeeding at Wimbledon were slim.
"I'm not too good on grass but I'll try to adapt," he added.
Tall and powerful, Monfils finished Kusnetsov off in 62 minutes, acing his oppo
nent out of the match on his second serve.
"My ambition is to win the seniors title here in a few years," he said, a feat
six-times grand slam winner Edberg never achieved.
