Rash of Upsets Spread Through Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, England - Several top seeds in action on Day 3 at the DFS Classic
were forced to put away their grass court games a little earlier than expected
after a flood of upsets swept through Birmingham on Wednesday.
Top seed Nadia Petrova was among the second round victims, falling to Japan's
Shinobu Asagoe in three sets, 64 26 64. No.5 seed Jelena Dokic, No.6 Nathalie
Dechy and No.7 Eleni Daniilidou were also eliminated in their first matches of
the week.
Petrova, looking to recover from a disappointing third round exit at Roland
Garros, didn't get her grass court campaign off to the start she would have
enjoyed. The young Russian struggled out of the gate in the first set and had
to play catchup all the way to the third set.
Asagoe, the runner-up in Birmingham last year to Magdalena Maleeva, continues
to perform well at the grass-court event, proving she could again become a
contender for the title. Last year's appearance in the Birmingham final was
her first at a WTA Tour event. She reached her second WTA Tour final earlier
this year in Hobart where she fell to Amy Frazier.
Up next for Asagoe will be French teenager Tatiana Golovin, who secured her
place in the third round after Daniela Hantuchova retired due to an upper
respiratory illness. Golovin was leading 60 3-1 at the time of Hantuchova's
retirement.
Golovin has advances to the third round in her first grass court event. The
16-year-old improves to 16-7 in her breakthrough season on the Tour.
One year ago, the young Frenchwoman was ranked No.315 in the world, but
thanks to consistent efforts at the Australian Open, Paris indoor and Miami,
Golovin recently reached a career-best ranking of No.65.
Hantuchova, a former Top 5 player, has struggled recently on the Tour that
includes losses in eight of her last 11 matches. The former Indian Wells
champion has slipped to 7-11 on the year and recently dropped out of the Top
50 for the first time since October 2001.
Like Hantuchova, the 2004 struggles by No.5 seed Dokic continued this week as
the 2002 Birmingham champion fell to qualifier Shenay Perry, 64 76(4).
Dokic's record this season dropped to 6-12 as the Serbian player has now
dropped five straight matches and eight of her last nine.
Dokic was at the top of her game back in 2002 when she won the Birmingham
title, defeating Anastasia Myskina in the final. Shortly after winning in
Birmingham, Dokic soared to a career-best No.4 in the world in August, but
couldn't hold onto that ranking for long. She finished 2002 at No.9 in
the world and then struggled to a 28-30 mark in 2003, slipping to No.15 in
the year in rankings.
After missing the first month of the season, Dokic made her debut at the
Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and looked sharped in her first event of 2004,
reaching the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Lindsay Davenport.
But things haven't been very bright since leaving Japan. The 21-year-old has
failed to win back-to-back matches since and has only three wins in her last
11 events.
Defending champion Magdalena Maleeva won her sixth straight match in
Birmingham, this time defeating Germany's Anca Barna in three sets, 36 64 63.
Maleeva won her most recent WTA Tour title last year on the grass courts in
Birmingham, defeating Shinobu Asagoe in straight sets for the 10th title of
her career.
The No.4 seed will next take on Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn, who defeated
American Jill Craybas, 61 75.
No.9 seed Emilie Loit moved into the third round by defeating Cara Black, 61
67(2) 63. The Frenchwoman, a winner of two WTA Tour titles this year in
Casablanca and Estoril, will next face Akiko Morigami, who moved into the
final 16 after No.7 seed Daniilidou was forced to retire with a right
Achilles strain. Morigami was leading 26 62 2-0 at the time of the retirement.
No.6 seed Dechy was also unable to move out of the second round, losing to
Italian qualifier Roberta Vinci, 60 46 76(5).
